Last spring, Dr. Erika Silva, a Plan International Canada health advisor, supported humanitarian efforts in Poland, where many of the 13 million Ukrainian refugees fled. February 24 will mark one year since the conflict in Ukraine began.
In her interview, she describes how painful it was to witness women and children suffering. But hope can always prevail amid resilience.

Hello, 2023! The hopeful moments shared in these videos have us pumped to make the world a better place for children this year.
After everything that happened in 2022, we’re boldly and optimistically ready for 2023 to be better for everyone, especially children around the world.
In the face of COVID-19, climate change, conflict in Ukraine, the hunger crisis and
much more, the people in these top five videos show us that hope is possible when
we work together.
Every challenge, whether addressing the hunger crisis, ending gender inequality or combatting climate change, is an opportunity to make the future better for everyone.
No two mothers and their babies are alike, but over the past few years, the COVID-19 pandemic made accessing maternal and newborn health care even more difficult for everyone. The project’s rapid response to COVID-19 meant we were able to support more than 1.3 million people in five countries.
THANK YOU to all caregivers – you inspire us to do good. Consider helping train a health care worker in honour of someone who cares for you.

You start thinking that humanity is really mean, but then you see these volunteers… so there is a little bit of hope.
The journey doesn’t stop in Timor-Leste. You can visit 40 other sponsored children’s communities around the world – no passport needed.
Take a virtual trip to Timor-Leste with Jenadia, a sponsored child with Plan International!
She and other youth from her community received mobile journalism training from Plan International and have teamed up to share their story with you. Jenadia’s community is struggling with malnutrition, just like many countries caught in the most devastating hunger crisis we’ve ever seen. But Plan International and child sponsors are helping empower and equip her community to bring more healthy food to the table. And that has Jenadia jumping for joy.

No more empty promises.
What do youth want? Climate action! When do they want it? Now!
Before COP27 (the United Nation’s 27th climate change conference), Ineza Umuhoza Grace, an eco-feminist and the global coordinator for the Loss and Damage Youth Coalition, penned a report with Plan International, demanding the world take urgent action to support the millions of children who have been affected by loss and damage due to climate change.
Youth called and the world answered. A loss and damage fund was created at COP27 for low-income countries most at risk from the effects of climate change.
Now the hard work begins to implement it and ensure no child is left behind (check out our full statement about the fund). Ineza and her peers’ determined activism contributed to this historic decision
4. Youth call for loss and damage finance at COP27
Loss and damage refers to the destructive impacts of climate change that cannot be avoided and go beyond what people and communities can adapt to, especially if they lack access to funds or resources to deal with loss (like irreparably losing life or biodiversity) and damages (like infrastructure that must be repaired).

5. Children of the Andes
There isn’t a mountain high enough to keep Vivian from school.
She’s 10 years old and lives with her grandparents who rear sheep and llamas in a highland village in Cotopaxi, Ecuador. Her mother left to work in the city when she was just a baby.
Vivian has received a scholarship from Plan International that has made her education more affordable. “It is important to study and learn because it helps me to live better,” she says.
Her house doesn’t have much more than the basics, but she’s grateful for the life she has.
